ISO Shipping Container definition
ISO Shipping Container refers to 20’ or 40’ high cube container with standard size and design.
The International Organization for Standardization’s definition of a container
A container is a kind of transportation equipment and should meet the following requirements:
- It is durable and strong enough to be used repeatedly;
- It is specially designed to facilitate the transportation of goods, and does not need to be reloaded in the middle of transportation in one or more modes of transportation;
- Equipped with devices that are convenient for loading, unloading and handling, especially for transferring from one mode of transportation to another;
- When designing, it should be noted that it is convenient to fill or unload the goods;
ISO Shipping Container Mark
There are two types of container markings required by the International Organization for Standardization: mandatory markings and optional markings.
1. Mandatory mark
(1) Identification mark
Including box owner code, which is the code of the company to which the container belongs; sequence number, also known as box number; check number.
(2) Job mark
Including rated weight and deadweight mark; air, land and water intermodal container mark; electric shock warning mark on the top of the box.
2. Checkmark
(1) Identification mark
Including country code, size and type code.
(2) Job mark
Including super high mark; International Railway Union mark.
Except for the total weight and self-weight font height not less than 50mm (2in), the font size of the mark should not be less than 100mm (4in). The width of all fonts and the thickness of the strokes should have proper proportions.
The handwriting should be clear, durable, and use a different color from the ISO Shipping Container itself.
3. Box master code, sequence number, check number
According to international standards, the main code of the container is represented by four capitalized Latin letters, and the first three digits are specified by the owner. To distinguish the container from other equipment, the fourth letter should be represented by U.
The serial number of the container is also called the container number. It is composed of six Arabic numerals. If the effective number is less than six digits, the six digits shall be filled with “0” before the effective digit.
The check number is each number in the box owner code and sequence number, which is obtained by conversion in a certain way.
4. Country code: size and type code
(1) Country and region code
The country and region code used should be expressed following the two-letter code determined by ISO 3166.
(2) Size and type code
The size and type code of the ISO Shipping Container is composed of four Arabic numerals. The first two digits indicate the size and the last two digits indicate the type.
(3) Rated weight and tare weight
The rated weight should be the rated mass, and the self-weight should be the empty box mass.
The rated weight is the maximum working total weight of the container, referred to as the total weight.
The tare weight is the weight of the container when it is empty, the rated weight and tare weight of the container should be marked following ISO 668 and expressed in kilograms (kg) and pounds at the same time.
E.g:
“CN22G1”:
“CN” is the code of the country where the container is registered (China);
“22G1” is the container size and type code, “22” means that the length of the container is 20ft (6068mm), the width of the container is 8ft (2438mm), and the height of the container is 8ft6in (2591mm);
“G1” means an ISO Shipping Container with a breathable cover on the top.
